Even the work done on probiotics by Dr Elie Metchnikoff, Nobel Prize Winner (1908) was based on local bacteria.
- He discovered that Bulgaricans lived longer because they ate lots of cultured foods which contained local bacteria.
The bacteria responsible was named after the country of origin, Lactobacillus Bulgaricus, in honour of the country, Bulgaria.
Progutt was jointly developed by the Malacca Institute of Biotechnology and microbiologists from a government certified laboratory in Pune, India. It was developed from a stock of 85 different local strains originating from human milk, fruits, milk, fermented coconut water and soil microorganisms. Five most viable live microorganisms were selected.
Each capsule contains 10 billion CFU; 2 billion CFU for each strain:
- Lactobacillus acidophilus
- Lactobacillus casei
- Bifidobacterium longum
- Lactobacillus bulgaricus
- Streptococcus thermophilus
